“O SON OF SPIRIT! Burst thy cage asunder, and even as the phoenix of love soar into the firmament of holiness. Renounce thyself and, filled with the spirit of mercy, abide in the realm of celestial sanctity.”

Obituary

(1933–2021) With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our dearly loved mother, Hoda Rushdy, on 25 January 2021, at the age of 87. Hoda was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and spent her remaining time surrounded by the love of her family, and under the care of her daughter Nahed Squires and son-in-law Dr. Philip Squires.

Inspired by the Baha’i Teachings, Hoda and her late husband Gamal lived a rich life of service to others that took them from their native Egypt to Ethiopia, Burundi, and England. After the passing of her beloved husband in 1999, Hoda moved to Paris, Ontario to be closer to family and then to Stratford, where she established her residence in 2006. She spent the last eight years at the McCarthy Retirement Residence before moving in with family.

Hoda is the cherished mother of Nahed Squires, Sherif Rushdy and Hayat Rushdy-Hanna, a beloved grandmother to eight and great-grandmother to seven.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a small family funeral service with live streaming will be held on Friday, January 29, 2021, at 11 a.m. at W.G.Young Funeral Home. Live stream is available at the top of this page.

Special thanks to Dr. Peter Brooks and his staff, Sue Madden (RMT), OneCare Support Services, as well as the entire palliative care team for the dedicated and compassionate care they provided her through her final days.

For those who wish, donations may be made in her memory to the Local Community Food Centre in Stratford or to the VON Perth-Huron.

In lieu of sending flowers...

We ask that friends and family offer acts of service such as helping a neighbour or someone in need. These acts will bring Hoda great joy.
